What is the NCLEX CAT Exam? Complete Guide 2026
What is the NCLEX CAT Exam? Complete Guide 2026
The NCLEX uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) — a technology that customizes each exam to the candidate’s ability level. Understanding how CAT works is essential to passing.
How NCLEX CAT Works
After you answer each question, the computer re-estimates your ability and selects the next question targeting your exact level. Every question should feel challenging — that is by design, and it is a good sign.
The Three Pass/Fail Rules
Rule 1: 95% Confidence Interval (Most Common)
The computer stops when it is 95% certain your ability is clearly above or below the passing standard — after you answer at least 85 items.
Rule 2: Maximum-Length Exam
If your ability stays close to the passing standard, the exam continues to 150 items. Your final ability estimate determines pass or fail.
Rule 3: Run-Out-of-Time (R.O.O.T.)
If time expires before 150 items: fail if fewer than 85 answered. If 85+ answered, your final ability estimate decides.
